Enzymes of Fatty Acid Metabolism

چکیده
The mechanism of the biological oxidation and synthesis of fatty acids has largely been elucidated during the past few years through work in several laboratories (l-7). This work resulted in the complete confirmation of Knoop’s B oxidation theory and of the main conclusions derived from the early work of Dakin and Embden. Perhaps one of the most important aspects of the recent work is the demonstration that fatty acid synthesis occurs by a reversal of /3 oxidation. Fatty acid oxidation is accomplished through the sequence of Reactions 1 through 5. At the end of each sequence (Reaction 5), a 2-carbon fragment is split off from the carboxyl end of the fatty acid chain as acetyl CoA.’ This can enter the citric acid cycle for complete oxidation or condense with another molecule of acetyl CoA to form acetoacetyl CoA and, through deacylation of the latter in the liver, acetoacetate. The fatty acyl CoA shortened by 2 carbon atoms (the other product of Reaction 5) can undergo a new oxidation and cleavage sequence, etc., through Reactions 2 to 5. The reversal of these reactions, from acetyl CoA and hydro-

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the context of lipid metabolism research in physical activity, lipolysis, lipolysis hormone regulation and the fate of lipolysis products in exercise, fatty acid transporters, some genes involved in lipid metabolism, effect of resistance activity on lipolysis, adaptations of adipose tissue due to physical activity, lipoproteins and apoproteins...
متن کاملAn Evolutionary Relationship Between Stearoyl-CoA Desaturase (SCD) Protein Sequences Involved in Fatty Acid Metabolism
Background: Stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD) is a key enzyme that converts saturated fatty acids (SFAs) to monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) in fat biosynthesis. Despite being crucial for interpreting SCDs’ roles across species, the evolutionary relationship of SCD proteins across species has yet to be elucidated. This study aims to present this evolutionary relationship based on amino aci...

متن کاملMetabolic Effects of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Chickens: A Review
Chicken has been used as a suitable model for lipid metabolism studies, because dietary modifications especially dietary fat type can change chicken body composition. Fats act as a condense source of energy and certain fatty acids such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are required for both animal and human health. The n-3 PUFAs, especially, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic ...
متن کاملArabidopsis contains nine long-chain acyl-coenzyme a synthetase genes that participate in fatty acid and glycerolipid metabolism.
Long-chain acyl-coenzyme A (CoA) synthetases (LACSs) activate free fatty acids to acyl-CoA thioesters and as such play critical roles in fatty acid metabolism. This important class of enzymes factors prominently in several fatty acid-derived metabolic pathways, including phospholipid, triacylglycerol, and jasmonate biosynthesis and fatty acid beta-oxidation. In an effort to better understand th...
